The art of the game is very nice and the character designs are also pretty cool. Nekojishi is a visual novel about the pressures and consequences of deciding your future in a world of gods and spirits, the position that religion and folklore take in modern society, and three feline beast-men that Liao can’t seem to get out of his room or out of his head Orange Juice Dog. Through arrangements made by Yan Shu-Chi, Tiger and Leopard are given a single day to be incarnated and walk the earth as humans. As the story progresses you get to know the spirits and their intentions and are able to relate to Liao’s difficulty in which of them to help (or if to even help at all, since Liao’s got his own life and wasn’t prepared to deal with greater powers). I found that to be a really nice touch and pretty interesting. There even is a glossary for all related terms you encounter in the game. What I personally liked is the story and the information you learn about the respective spirits, gods, places, rituals etc. The other two are a lot more down-to-earth and their romantic feelings for the protagonist are only revealed near the end of the game. And as it turned out, yes, the Steam version is pretty light on the BL stuff (as far as I can tell). Because the game was on Steam I thought it couldn’t be that explicit and the Steam reviews seemed to confirm that.
Therefore, when I found Nekojishi on Steam, I thought I’d give it a try, since it’s free. I’m not a furry myself or much into furry visual novels in general, but I’d like to think of myself as pretty open-minded. And each of them has a request for Liao, now that his spiritual powers have accidentally awakened… The three entities he has to deal with from then on on a daily basis all appear to him as cat beasts (since he’s into furries). One day however his life changes in a not so typical way as suddenly he becomes able to see spirits. Nekojishi is a game about a pretty typical student named Liao who lives in Taipei.
